CASCOLAND PUBLIC ART FESTIVALS / 2006-2008

Cascoland is a multidisciplinary public art project initiated by Dutch artist Fiona de Bell, involving international artists, architects, designers and local talent and initiatives as well as urban communities and stakeholders. Cascoland is exploring a series of interventions in public space to create awareness of urban issues, mobility and the use of public space in a positive and creative framework. Our aim is to mobilize audiences and artists/craftspeople to participate in the shaping of their public space through artistic interventions and architectural objects.

VOID BUTOH DANCE / 2008 -2009

VOID is a performance project, lecture series and training workshop exploring the Ankoku Butoh dance, a performing art devised in Japan in the wake of the Second World War by the dancer and choreographer Tatsumi Hijikata (born Akita, 1928; died Tokyo, 1986). The VOID performance project offered a three-tiered approach to the development of the Ankoku Butoh Dance in a cross-cultural context. It is first and foremost a dance performance that was premiered by Swedish dancer Frauke in 3 different theatre locations in South Africa. This performance was extended and developed through a series of training and skills development workshops offered to over 70 people in 4 different locations across the country (including Rhodes and WITS university). In combination with this we also offered a focused Academic and Research development opportunity through an intensive lecture series, which shares never rare footage and other context around the origination of the Ankoku Butoh dance.
* The VOID performance will be touring Europe in April 2009.
